Herzing Student— independent

Herzing vs Capella: the widest gap in online nursing

These two sit at opposite ends of every axis that matters. One takes responsibility for your clinical placement and charges accordingly. The other takes none and can cost half as much. There is no middle here, and no universally right answer.

Both schools' published terms, checked August 2026. Capella's figure is modelled from the midpoint of its published FlexPath session band; Herzing's is its published per-credit rate for the FNP track.

The two things that differ

Who finds your preceptor
Herzing says it will secure the placement itself once you have completed the required steps. Capella states that securing a preceptor and site is the learner's own responsibility.
Opposite ends
How you are billed
Herzing charges per credit, so the total is close to fixed. Capella charges a flat fee per twelve-week session, so your pace sets your price entirely.
Fixed vs paced
Herzing MSN–FNP at the published rate, against a Capella learner finishing in four sessions$36,960 vs $12,500

That gap is not a discount or a trick. It is the price of the difference in who carries the placement risk, plus the difference between a fixed bill and one you can shrink by working quickly.

Capella is cheaper only if two things are true

The low figure assumes a self-starter finishing fast. A nurse who stalls in a self-paced programme pays for more sessions and can end up near Herzing's total anyway, with none of the placement support to show for it.

It also assumes you solve the preceptor problem yourself. If you cannot, the cheaper degree does not finish, which makes it infinitely expensive rather than cheap.

So the honest test is this. Are you disciplined enough for self-paced work, and do you have a realistic route to a clinical placement? Two yeses and Capella is very hard to beat. One no and the comparison narrows sharply. Two nos and Herzing's premium starts to look like the cheaper option.

Who should pick which

Capella suits you if
You work without deadlines, you want the lowest total or the fastest finish, and you either have a preceptor lined up or work somewhere that hosts students routinely.
Cheapest at pace
Herzing suits you if
Placement is the thing that worries you, you want a school that owns that problem, and you would rather pay a known premium than carry an unknown risk.
Most certainty
Look at Walden too if
You want placement help without Herzing's price. Its promise is narrower and its gate harder, but its limits are published and it sits between the two on cost.
The middle

Two questions decide this, and we can answer both.

Whether self-paced study genuinely suits how you work, and whether you have a real route to a clinical placement. Twenty minutes, no cost, no obligation.
