Herzing Student— independent

Herzing is the expensive one, and it is not close

On the family nurse practitioner track Herzing charges $770 a credit across 48 credits. That is meaningfully more than Walden and far more than Capella at pace. The question worth answering is not whether it costs more, because it plainly does, but what the difference is buying.

Herzing's published per-credit rate and credit count for the BSN-to-MSN Family Nurse Practitioner track, checked August 2026. Rates differ by programme and intake, and fees and books sit on top. Confirm your own figure with the school.

The arithmetic

MSN–FNP tuition before fees and books, 48 credits at the published rate$36,960

Herzing bills by the credit, so unlike a subscription school there is no way to shrink the total by going faster. That number is close to fixed. The only thing that genuinely moves it is transfer credit.

Set against the alternatives

Three different billing models, which is exactly why sticker comparisons mislead. Each figure below sits on that school's own published basis.

Herzing
Per credit, effectively fixed. $770 across 48 credits on the FNP track, with the placement commitment included.
~$36,960
Walden
Per credit on an eleven-week term calendar. 56 quarter credits BSN-to-MSN at roughly $485. Placement matched only after five documented refusals.
~$27,000
Capella FlexPath
A flat fee per twelve-week session, so your pace sets your price. Fast finishers pay least. You secure your own preceptor entirely.
$12,500–$28,000

Roughly speaking, Herzing asks about ten thousand dollars more than Walden, and up to twice what a quick Capella learner pays. That premium is the price of the placement commitment. Whether it is worth paying comes down to one thing.

The one fact that decides it

Preceptor supply where you live. If you already have someone who would take you, or you work somewhere that routinely hosts students, you are buying insurance against a risk you do not carry, and the cheaper schools become very hard to argue against.

If you are in a saturated market with no route in, the calculation inverts completely. A stalled practicum does not merely delay you. Nurses leave programmes over it, having already paid for most of one. Against that, ten thousand dollars for a school that says it will secure the site itself is not obviously expensive.

No website can answer that for you, including this one. It is a question about your county, your specialty and your employer, and it takes about twenty minutes to answer properly.

Work out whether the premium is insurance or waste.

That turns entirely on preceptor supply in your county and specialty. It is a question about where you live rather than about Herzing, and it is answerable in one call.
